Happy New Year everybody! I’m sure we are all very much looking forward to 2021, but first we have a New Year’s Eve college basketball treat with a top 25 matchup border rivalry between Wisconsin and Minnesota.
Wisconsin Badgers (8-2, 2-1)
After their 9 point road upset of Michigan State combined with Iowa’s surprise loss to Minnesota, many people were getting ready to anoint the Badgers as the best team in the Big 10. Then Monday happened and Wisconsin lost at home to Maryland who picked up their first road win and first conference wins of the season. After putting up 85 on MSU, Wisconsin only scored 64 against Maryland. The Terps out scored the Badgers 38-20 in the paint which is usually the Badgers bread and butter. Wisconsin also 53.3% from the free throw line, leaving 7 free points off the board. D’Mitrk Trice is starting to assert himself as the team’s best offensive option as he leads the Badgers with 14.2 PPG.
Minnesota Golden Gophers (9-1, 2-1)
Here come the Gophers! After getting pasted by the Illini, Minnesota upsets Iowa, which some might have considered a flash in the pan game, then Minnesota doubled down and absolutely blasted MSU Monday night beating the Spartans by 25! Minnesota is officially for real in my book. Even though I am just now officially recognizing the team as for real, I have been a believer in Marcus Carr all season. He is the Gophers best player and he has the inside track to be an national all American by season’s end. He leads the team with 24 PPG. He is also getting more support as he now has 4 teammates averaging at least 8 PPG.
Rivalry games are always close and competitive and that was before Minnesota started playing like a top 25 team. Minnesota is rolling right now winning 4 out of their last 5 ATS. The Gophers have also won 3 out of 4 as an Underdog this season. I do think Wisconsin will win this one but I think that Marcus Carr and the Gophers will keep this close and do enough to cover the 8.5 spread. Take Minnesota +8.5
