Bears Decline Trubisky’s Fifth-Year Option

By: Jay Patel

The Chicago Bears made a critical decision when they declined QB Mitchell Trubisky’s fifth-year option. After bringing in Nick Foles to compete for the starting role, there have been non-stop rumors that this could be the end of Trubisky’s time in Chicago. However, I wouldn’t count him out this season.

This move was both about the stats and the money. If the option was picked up, it would pay Trubisky a whopping $24.8 million in 2021. That’s a lot of money for a QB with limited success. By declining his option, the Bears will be able to assess Trubisky this season, and see if he’s worth re-signing. It also saves a cap-strapped team tons of money. Trubisky is slated to make $4.423 million this season.

Since being selected No. 2 in the 2017 NFL Draft, it’s been a rollercoaster ride for both Trubisky and the Bears. His rookie season was filled with flashes, and in 2018, the Bears took off. The defense was one of the most feared in the league, and Chicago’s offense was hitting its stride. Trubisky and the Bears finished 12-4, clinching a playoff berth. Additionally, he was named a Pro-Bowler after finishing the 2018 season with 3,223 yards, 24 touchdowns, 12 interceptions, and rushing for 421 yards. It had Chicago hopeful that the Bears could continue this dominating ride.

However, in 2019, the Bears took a major step backwards. They concluded the season at a mediocre 8-8 with several concerns. The defense, still good, struggled at times in key moments. It wasn’t much helpful that the offense couldn’t put together solid drives. Sure, most of the blame can be place on the QB. However, Chicago had an O-line that couldn’t hold it down, and a run game that failed to show up at times. Trubisky’s tenure has been filled with criticism, but sometimes, you have to look at all aspects of the team before assuming who’s to blame.

Four of the five top picks in the 2017 draft had their options declined. Cleveland Browns DE Myles Garrett was the only player’s option that was picked up.

This is the last chance for Mitchell Trubisky to live up to the hope the Bears had on him. The 2020 season will decide his fate and future with the Chicago Bears. It hasn’t been a pretty scene since Trubisky took over the starting role. Some could say there have been more negatives than positives. But, I believe this competition with Nick Foles will push Mitchell to a new level. A lot of people have given up on him, however, I still believe there’s a good chance that Trubisky can shock the football world.
