Analysis and Best Bet

Yesterday was a fun one (for the Cubs at least). For the first seven innings it looked like the game was going to go down to the wire as the Cubs held onto a narrow 4-3 lead. Exiting the 8th inning, Chicago built a nine run lead after an eight run eighth inning. Joc Pederson is swinging a red-hot bat, increasing his average to .269 on the season. He hit a leadoff home run yesterday and added another RBI on a sac fly. Speaking of red-hot, the Happer has been tattooing the baseball lately. He went 3-4 yesterday. The Cubs have been rolling with series wins over the Tigers and Nationals and taking the first of a critical divisional series.

The Cubs will send young righty Adbert Alzolay to the mound today. Alzolay has a 4.62 ERA on the season. The kid has done well, the only issue is the long ball. He’s allowed eight homers, however, his 0.89 WHIP is pretty impressive. IF he can limit the home run damage, Alzolay has a chance to go deep into this one. St. Louis will counteract with Miles Mikolas who will be making his season debut after a lengthy IL stint (right shoulder injury). Yesterday, the Cubs got a great pitching performance from the professor as he picked up his fourth win of the season. The Cards bullpen blew up after a solid pitching performance by Carlos Martinez. Their bullpen has the highest walk rate in baseball and we saw that in full display yesterday (two bases loaded walks).

Adbert will look to limit the long ball damage tonight

I’m expecting a close one tonight. Mikolas has pitched well against the Cubbies, but Alzolay has the stuff to make this another starting pitching duel. We saw the Cubs offense explode late and they have the chance to do that again with a subpar Cardinals bullpen. If Chicago can get to Mikolas early, the Cardinals will be in for another long game. I do think Adbert will give up a couple runs of his own. The Cubs are rolling and I’m backing the hotter team right now. I’m taking the Cubs money line for a unit at -107. Time to clinch another series win.
