The Cubs were able to get the bats going and had production from everyone in the order. Alec Mills twirled a gem going 7 innings, giving up 7 hits, 3 runs, 1 walk, and 7 strikeouts. It was nice to see him have a nice start after giving up a lot of hard contact against the Cardinals last week. As for the offense, the man of the match could have gone to either Javy Baez or David Bote. Javy went 3-5 with 2 home runs and 3 RBI while Bote went 3-5 with 4 RBI and a home run. The bullpen was also a bright spot as this was the second straight game where the pen did not allow a run. For the Tigers, they looked sloppy all around. Mize pitched decent but the defense was not making the plays they needed to help him out. One highlight from them was getting to see the Oak Forest product Kyle Funkhouser get to pitch and he looked great.

Tyler Chatwood will make the start after coming off the IL from a back injury. He is 2-1 with a 5.40 ERA and since he is coming off an injury, he will be on a tight pitch count. He did get rocked in his last start which was in Kansas City, but I would expect him to make adjustments and turn it around. The good news is that Jose Quintana will make his 2020 debut as he is available out of the bullpen tonight. Not sure if Chatwood and Q will throw 3 innings each or what the plan is, but I am excited that the Cubs are getting 2 quality starters back tonight. It was good to see Javy break out of his major slump last night and hopefully it was a spark for his confidence to get the bat going again. The Cubs are in the early part of a long road trip, so they are going to need his production if they want to stack some wins in the W column.
For the Tigers, Spencer Turnbull will take the ball. The right hander is 2-2 with a 3.65 ERA. One downside with him are the free passes. In his last 2 starts, he has walked 8 batters while only going 6.2 innings pitched. In that span, he has also given up 6 earned runs. This will be his first career start against the Cubs so he will have a chance to get some outs at least the first time through the lineup. The bad news is that Turnbull is 1-13 with a 5.21 ERA at home. The Tigers pitching staff, as a whole is in the bottom tier in some major categories and will have some growing pains in a rebuild year. Their defense looked very rough last night but I think they will tighten it up tonight. It is tough for a MLB team to have bad defense for two straight games.
Analysis and Best Bet
After avoiding the sweep on Sunday and starting the long road trip with a win, this team looks to be in a groove right now. It is hard to bet against them with how they are rolling so I am going to take the Cubs 1-.5 at +110. Turnbull tends to walk a lot of hitters due to control issues and with the patience of the Cubs hitters, they should be able to clog up the bases and move some runs across the plate. The Cubs know that these games against the Tigers are all winnable so I can see these guys ready to pounce on Turnbull and get to him early.
