The Cubs come into play tonight up 2 games on the Cardinals in the division, and they will send Jose Quintana and his 10-7 record and 4.23 ERA, to start the series against the Phillies. Over his last 7 starts, Q is 6-0 with a 3.67 ERA while going 41.2 innings and only giving up 17 runs and 6 walks. The Cubs will face Jason Vargas today, and while they do not have a lot of experience nor success against him, one person to keep an eye on is Nicholas Castellanos. Castellanos is 4-8 against Vargas and has the best numbers against him than any other Cubs hitter. Having the off day yesterday should really get the players some rest that they need so I would expect them to be firing on all cylinders tonight.
The Phillies are on a 2-game losing streak and they look to get back on track as Jason Vargas will take the ball. Vargas has a 6-6 record and a 4.09 ERA, and in his last start he only went 5 innings while giving up 4 hits, 3 runs, 3 walks and only 1 strikeout. The Phillies have playoff aspirations and they are in the thick of a tight NL Wild Card race. Their pitching has been a weak spot and they are 23rd in the MLB in slugging percentage which has been one of the reasons for their struggles. The Phillies have faced Quintana before, and they do not have too much success against him so the bats might be in trouble tonight.
Analysis and Prediction
With Quintana pitching decent ball and Jason Vargas struggling, I think this will be a pretty lopsided matchup. I am going to go with the Cubs -1.5 at +120. The one slight concern I do have in this game is the Cubs bullpen but I think the bullpen, with a needed day off yesterday, can get the job done.
