Chicago Cubs vs Seattle Mariners: Preview & Prediction – 4/30/19

Preview

The Cubs head to the great Northwest to visit the Seattle Mariners at T-Mobile Park to start a quick 2 game set tonight at 9:10 pm. The Cubs are heavy favorites at -142 and the over/under is set at 8.5. The pitching matchup features 2 veterans as the Cubs throw southpaw Cole Hamels (3-0,3.16 ERA) and the Mariners counter with former CY Young award winner “King” Felix Hernandez (1-2, 3.91 ERA)

Analysis

The Cubs are coming in on a real hot streak winning 7 of their last 10 and they also haven’t lost a series since April 5-7 in Milwaukee. The Cubs are finishing up this 5-game road trip after these next 2 in Seattle they have a 2-1 record thus far. The Mariners are one of those under the radar teams that have gotten off to a blistering start (18-13) and are tied for the lead in the AL West. Hamels is coming off a rough start walking 6 and failing to go 6 innings. Hamels having spent time in Texas, is no stranger to facing the Mariners. Cole last faced them in 2017 and in his last 3 starts against them, he has gone at least 6 innings, allowing less than 3 runs and striking out at least 7. For the Mariners, “King” Felix isn’t the dominant force he once was but he’s still got that potential to command the game every time out, over his storied 15-year career he has a record of 169-130, 3.34 ERA with 2488 strikeouts. This season he’s gone 7 innings only once – his last time out against San Diego.

Prediction:

The Cubs are riding on this nice run as they are getting contributions from everyone, with the strongest part of their game being the starting pitching. Hamels and Jose Quintana have lost 1 game combined this season and that was Quintana on April 5th, Hamels won’t repeat his 6 walk performance from last time out and he will go at least 7 allowing 3 runs or less. Furthermore, the Cubs have had one of their stars waking up recently at the plate ( Kyle Schwarber .389 last 6 games) and another star not showing any signs of slowing down ( Javy Baez .360 with 3 homers in his last 6 games). I see both of them playing a key role tonight and not having the pitcher bat in the AL park will only help, take the Cubs and the under.

Score: Cubs 5 Mariners 1
