Chicago Cubs vs Seattle Mariners: Preview & Prediction – 5/1/19

The Cubs take on the Mariners this afternoon at T-Mobile Field in Seattle, at 5:40 PM. Cubs are favorites by the slimmest of margins -105 and the over/under is 9. This will conclude the Cubs road trip in which they have gone 4-1 thus far. The pitching matchup features dueling lefty aces as the Cubs throw Jon Lester (1-1, 2.37 ERA) who will be making his second start back after an IL stint. The Mariners will counter with the surprising Marco Gonzales (5-0,2.80 ERA)

Jon Lester will be “full go” after his first start back off the IL, he was restricted to 75 pitches. Lester has faced Seattle just once before as a Cub in 2016, in a Cubs 12-1 win. For Seattle, the start of this season by Marco Gonzales has been a continuation of a solid 2018 where he went 13-9 with an ERA of 4.00. This season he as allowed less than 4 runs and walked less then 2 in each of his 7 starts.

Players to Watch:

Cubs: Javy Baez is mashing against lefties this season, batting .400 with 4 homers. With Gonzales being a finesse pitcher, having only 34 strikeouts in 39 innings, Baez is ripe for a big output.

Mariners: Tim Beckham, the former #1 overall pick is a force against lefties hitting .435 with 2 homers thus far this year.

Jon Lester without restrictions will look to regain his role as ace of the staff, Lester hasn’t allowed more than two runs in any of his starts this season. The Cubs are going for a sweep of this 2-game series and would finish the west coast road trip with an impressive 5-1 record. Baez will have a day against the M’s lefty and Lester will find the form he had before his injury. Cubs will take care of business and take the under as well.

Score: Cubs 5 Mariners 2, and under 9
