I know I have been slacking on the previews over the last few days. It’s been a busy couple weeks for me with this being finals week and moving week. Luckily, I was able to watch both games of the doubleheader yesterday and boy did it feel good taking both games when the Dodgers sent out their two best pitchers. I thought the pitching was excellent starting with Kyle Hendricks going the distance in game 1 and Keegan Thompson making his first big league start in game 2 and despite Craig Kimbrel giving up a basket homer to Max Muncy, the bullpen pitched pretty well. Tonight, the Cubs will look to go for the sweep as it will be Walker Buehler vs Adbert Alzolay. Let’s get into it!
Los Angeles Dodgers
Dave Roberts looks to avoid the sweep and he will send out Buehler who has a 1-0 record and a 3.16 ERA. He was roughed up a bit in his last start which was against the Reds where he went 6.1 innings, giving up 7 hits, 5 runs with 10 punchouts. Although the ERA may be a tad high for him, he has done a good job limiting the hits and walks as he has a WHIP under 1. I am curious to see what kind of lineup Dave Roberts throws out there. He made some sketchy decisions, according to Dodgers Twitter. I didn’t disagree with them, especially when you leave a hot bat like Matt Beaty out of the lineup who came off a 7 RBI game against the Brew Crew. But whatever, he should be in the lineup facing the righty Alzolay, but Dave Roberts has shocked us before but who knows. The Dodgers offense has been scuffling these past few weeks and are 2-8 in their last 10 games. Tonight would be a good night to turn it around before an off day tomorrow and right before the Freeway Series kicks off this weekend with the Angels.
As mentioned above, Alzolay will get the start tonight. In his last start, he pitched well against a high-powered Braves offense going 6 innings while scattering 4 hits on 2 runs while striking out 6 strikeouts. That was his deepest start of the season which took some stress off the bullpen. After a doubleheader yesterday, with one game including “extra innings”, it would be fair to say that David Ross would like to get at least 6 innings out of Alzolay tonight. The defense did look somewhat strange with Kris Bryant playing in centerfield and Eric Sogard playing shortstop for Baez in game 2 but we should be getting the regulars back in there with only one game today.
Analysis & Best Bet
I will keep it quick and easy for tonight’s game. I am going with no run scored in the first inning at -160. The Dodgers have never faced Alzolay so they may need a couple innings to get the scouting report on him and we all know how good of a pitcher Buehler can be. This should be a fun game tonight as the Cubs look to go for the sweep. Let’s hope the north siders can break out the brooms tonight!
