The Marlins look to take the first two of a four-game series where game two is tonight at 7:05 PM at Wrigley Field. This is a matchup featuring dueling lefties in Caleb Smith (3-0, 2.00 ERA) and the Cubs counter with ace Jon Lester (2-1, 1.73 ERA). The Cubs are favorites at -160 and the over/under is set at a poultry 6.5.
The Cubs 7 game win streak was snapped yesterday after Pedro Strop blew the lead in the 9th, and the Cubs ultimately lost 6-5. The Cubs look to Jon Lester to start another win streak tonight. Lester has been solid in his last two starts, going 6 innings in each while allowing 4 earned runs over those 12 innings. Caleb Smith has been the Marlins best pitcher this season. In his last 4 starts, he has pitched 24 innings, allowing just 5 earned over those starts. He has also struck out at least 6 in each of those starts.
Players to Watch:
Kris Bryant: Bryant seems to have found the power that was zapped after his shoulder injury last season, over his last 6 games he’s hitting .316 with 4 extra base hits including 2 homers.
Starlin Castro: The former Cubs shortstop absolutely mashes lefties at a .394 clip, while amassing 2 homers and 5 RBI against them.
The Cubs look to even up the series after dropping game one, both pitchers have been solid on the season but the Cubs have the advantage in having Lester on the mound. Lester will shut the Marlins down and after the bullpens’ failure last night, he won’t want to come out if the game is close. Lester will show his bulldog mentality going at least 7 allowing 2 runs or less. The offensive won’t get much done tonight but they will get the job done, Bryant will have a multi-hit game in the effort. Take the Cubs and the under.
Score: Cubs 4 Marlins 1, under 6.5
