Miami Marlins vs Chicago Cubs: Preview & Prediction – 5/8/19

The teams split the first two of a four-game series, game three is tonight 6:35 PM at Wrigley Field. The pitching matchup features Kyle Hendricks (2-4, 3.93 ERA) for the Cubs and the Marlins will throw righty Jose Urena (1-5, 5.22 ERA) The Cubs are favorites -220 and the over/under is set at 8.

The Cubs took game two in dramatic fashion with a Kris Bryant 3-run walkoff homer in the ninth. They look to build off that momentum today, and they have just the man on the mound to help. Hendricks is making his first start since vanquishing the St. Louis Cardinals in a 2-hit shutout needing just 82 pitches to do so. His numbers at Wrigley are the real story, in 21 innings pitched he has allowed just 2 earned runs while striking out 16. Urena struggled in his last start giving up 5 earned runs in 5 innings of work.

Players to Watch:

Kyle Hendricks: In his last 2 home starts he struck out 11 against Arizona over 7 innings while allowing 0 runs. In his last start he threw a 2-hit shut out against St. Louis needing only 82 pitches to do so, I expect more of the same today, with the rain looming and the start moved up, expect him to take advantage of the Marlins and get them swinging early in counts.

Curtis Granderson: The Chicago native is the active leader in triples, and is a stabilizing force for this young club. His approach could be key to setting the tone for his teammates.

Hendricks is nearly untouchable at home. He’s coming off a command performance against the Cardinals and faces a much weaker lineup tonight. With the rain a possible factor, look for him to pound the zone early and test the Marlins patience. Urena is the league leader in HBP so his control could be his undoing. Take the Cubs and the under.

Score: Cubs 3 Marlins 1, under 8
