It was an eventful week for the Chicago Bears. They thinned the TE group even more, made several roster cuts, a key defensive played opted out of the season, two players were named to the NFL 100 list, and the QB battle is right around the corner.
Braunecker Cut, Shaheen Traded
The Bears now have seven TEs on the roster after two moves were made. Veteran TE Ben Braunecker was released after coming to Chicago in 2016. He appeared in 47 games (seven starts), totaling 13 catches for 142 yards. He scored his first NFL TD against Detroit on Nov. 10 last season. Braunecker didn’t have a role with the Bears after the additions of three new tight ends, and it was only a matter of time before his tenure with the Bears was over.
Second-round bust Adam Shaheen was traded to the Miami Dolphins for a 2021 seventh-round pick that could become a sixth-round pick. Shaheen was hampered by several foot and ankle injuries throughout the beginning of his NFL career. He only appeared in 27 games (13 starts), catching 26 passes for 249 yards and four touchdowns. He joins ex-Bear Jordan Howard in hopes of rejuvenating a once promising NFL career.
Bears Make More Cuts
Chicago continues to tweak their roster, making more roster cuts. Linebacker Devante Bond, safety Kentrell Brice, receiver Alex Wesley, and cornerback Tre Roberson (non-football injury designation) were all released this past week. More cuts will be made as the season approaches.
Eddie Goldman Opts Out
Goldman became the first Bear to opt out of the 2020 season due to COVID-19 concerns. He’s a key piece of the D-line, and his presence will be missed. However, you have to respect his decision. Goldman has started 63 games over his five seasons with the Bears. Recording 153 tackles, 12.5 sacks, and 17 TFL. He also earned Pro Bowl honors last season. The Bears could look into the free agent market to find some D-line help. One name that comes to mind, Damon Harrison.
Robinson, Mack Named to NFL 100 List
The NFL released their top 100 players heading into the 2020 season. Allen Robinson (No. 93) and Khalil Mack (No. 19) were the only two Bears to make the list. Both have been excellent since joining the Bears, becoming leaders both on and off the field. Chicago is lucky to have them.
QB Battle Set to Begin
The long awaited QB battle between Super Bowl hero Nick Foles and a determined Mitchell Trubisky is set to begin soon. Trubisky is ready to prove everyone wrong, while Foles is feeling confident in Matt Nagy’s system. So, who will win?
