The Los Angeles Dodgers and the San Diego Padres face off for game two of their series tonight in LA. The Dodgers took game one, 6-3, on Tuesday night, but won’t have Clayton Kershaw on the bump tonight. The pitching match up will be Matt Strahm for SD taking on Kenta Maeda for LA. Currently, the Dodgers are in first place in the NL West with the Padres sitting in third. Los Angeles is going to win this division again this season, but the battle for second place (and possibly a Wild Card) will be tight all season long. If San Diego wants to compete for one of those final playoff spots, they’ll have to win games like tonight’s.

San Diego Padres
Matt Strahm is having an alright start to his season. He has a 3.00 ERA, but his big downfall is pitching late in games. However, he has turned that around in his last four starts as he has finished six innings in each of those games. There is nothing great or amazing about Strahm on his stat sheet. This Dodgers lineup is a tough one, though, so this will be a different challenge. What’s really killing this Padres team so far this season is the team’s batting. They currently are only hitting .232 with a .289 on base percentage. That is not going to win you many baseball games no matter how good your pitching is.
Los Angeles Dodgers
The Dodgers are a god damn juggernaut. They will be going to the playoffs again this year while winning yet another division title. Cody Bellinger is the undoubted stud for this team. He currently has a slash line of .409/.486/.785. That is the most ridiculous thing I’ve ever seen. Justin Turner is also having another great season as he is ripping .293 so far. Their pitching rotation is still really good even though some of their ERAs are slightly inflated. Maeda will be hurling tonight, and the last time he took the mound against the Padres, he struggled. He allowed four runs and walked three batters in a May 5 loss. Maeda has the tendency to walk batters and is carrying a WHIP of 1.30 on the season which is the highest of his career.
Analysis & Prediction
I’m going to take the Padres +1.5 tonight. I think Maeda is going to continue to walk batters and is going to leave a mistake or two out there for some very good hitters. Strahm will have a good outing and continue his trend of going 6+ innings. Don’t let this game confuse you. The Dodgers are still very much so the best team in the National League. I just don’t think that the match up tonight leans in their favor.
