Texas Rangers vs Chicago White Sox: Preview & Prediction – 8/23/19

By: Trent Pruitt

The White Sox look to make it four wins in five games when they host the Rangers for the second game of a 4-game set between these non-playoff contenders. The Sox won convincingly in Yoan Moncada’s return, a game that saw him hit a bomb, a double, and drive in two RBI’s.

Texas Rangers

The Rangers season has been slowly unraveling over the last month and a half. The once playoff-hopeful Rangers will look to get back into the win column on Friday night when they take on the Southsiders at Guaranteed Rate. They’ll send the big righty out of Ole Miss, Lance Lynn to the bump. Lynn enters with a 14-8 record to go along with a 3.60 ERA and 1.22 WHIP. It’s definitely been a revival year for Lance as his ERA dropped from 4.77 from stints with the Yankees and Twins in 2018. That in part, and I may be the only one putting this together, is because of offseason addition Jeff Mathis at the catcher spot. Mathis is probably the worst hitter in all of baseball, but he calls a hell of a game from behind the plate. He’s 100% the reason, in my mind, why Lynn and Mike Minor are having comeback seasons this late in their careers.

Chicago White Sox

The declining Rangers will have to face rookie, Dylan Cease on Friday night. Cease has a nasty 12-6 curve to go along with a fastball that can reach the high 90’s. His lone issue, controlling his stuff. It’s very noticeable with Dylan that when he walks guys, they come around to score. Last time out Cease gave up 5 earned runs over 5.0 innings in a losing effort to the LA Angels. That L bumped him to 2-6 for his rookie campaign. As for the White Sox bats, they’re hot. Jose Abreu continues to have a comeback season with 28 homers and 97 RBI’s and Tim Anderson is still hitting north of .330.

Analysis & Prediction

As for stats and trends, there is no head to head for the Rangers against Cease. The only alarming difference is when you look at the Rangers home vs away batting splits. They hit .264 at home compared to .237 on the road. As for the White Sox, they faced Lynn earlier this season and notched 4 runs off of him in the first inning. They hit .328 against him, led by Wellington “Beef” Castillo, who is .600 (9-15) against Lynn. Let’s take the White Sox as underdogs Friday!
