Toronto vs New York (I) Preview & Prediction – 4/1/19

Tor +100, NYI -120, O/U 6 -110

As the NHL regular season winds down, Monday night the Maple Leafs will travel to New York to take on the Islanders.

Toronto has been in interesting form as of late. Just about a month ago it looked like there would be a tight battle for the 2nd spot (and home ice) in the Atlantic Division; but Toronto’s high level of play fell off and they find themselves pretty much locked in for the third spot, behind Boston. The Leafs enter this game at 45-26-7 with 97 points. They have only won 3 of their last 10 games and 1 out of the last 5 on the road. They enter this game coming off of losses to Philly (5-4) and Ottawa (4-2). They received a PP goal from Auston Matthews (37) and another 5 on 5 from Connor Brown (8) as Toronto was only able to muster up 2 goals on 44 shots on net against Ottawa.

The Islanders on the other hand, enter this game having won their last two games – putting up 5 goals in both games against the Jets and the Sabres, more recently. Anthony Beauvillier scored his 17th & 18th goals of the season on Saturday as Robin Lehner stopped 31 of 32 shots in the game. They will enter Monday’s game having won 4 out of 5 games and their overall record of 46-26-7 with 99 points.

There is one main reason that I am looking to take the Islanders in this matchup and that is because they still have something to play for. With three games left they are within 3 points of the Capitals for the Metro Division Title (with their 82nd game being a H2H against Washington). Might as well mention that the Penguins are right on their heels for the second spot in the Metro with 95 points and 4 games left (easy schedule too). Overall I think Barry Trotz squad will take care of business on Monday night, especially if Lehner is in net for New York. Take the Islanders in this matchup as they are in better form, on home ice, and still have a lot to play for.

Oh, and not to mention – this is another homecoming for former captain John Tavares so that building is going to be rocking.
