Manchester United just tacked on their fourth straight Premier League victory, handling a ten-man Tottenham Hotspur 2-0 at Old Trafford to keep their red-hot momentum alive. Things were actually looking pretty even out of the gate until Cristian Romero blew the game wide open in the first half. The Spurs center-back flew in with a reckless challenge on Casemiro, earned himself a straight red, and completely flipped the script. Thomas Frank’s squad was already up against it, but losing their defensive anchor made it an uphill battle they just didn’t have the legs for.
It didn’t take long for United to capitalize on the man advantage. Bryan Mbeumo struck shortly after the sending-off, putting the hosts in the driver’s seat. To their credit, Spurs hung around and managed not to get totally blown out, but they essentially offered zero offensive threat for the rest of the afternoon. Bruno Fernandes finally put the nail in the coffin late in the game. Diogo Dalot served up a gorgeous delivery from the right flank, and Fernandes caught Archie Gray sleeping at the back post, sneaking in to poke the ball into the bottom corner. That tally marked Bruno’s 200th goal involvement for United. As Stuart Pearce bluntly pointed out on the talkSPORT broadcast: “Thomas Frank has juggled the pack, and within minutes, they are 2-0 down. Archie Gray has been caught out at the far post.”
You really have to hand it to Michael Carrick—the guy is doing a phenomenal job and has this United team absolutely flying right now. They’re closing the gap on Aston Villa and Manchester City, looking like a legitimate force at the top of the table. The flip side of that coin is a full-blown crisis in North London. That’s now seven straight Premier League games without a win for Tottenham. With Romero staring down a four-match suspension for his tackle, Frank’s men are dead smack in the middle of a relegation dogfight.
While Carrick has things clicking on the pitch, the front office is still looking to reload, and the transfer rumor mill is churning. United is reportedly zeroing in on West Ham’s Mateus Fernandes as their primary target, but another name gaining serious traction as a premium alternative is Borussia Dortmund’s Felix Nmecha. The 25-year-old midfielder has been turning heads playing for Germany at the World Cup, especially after their 2-1 win over Côte d’Ivoire. Gary Neville didn’t hold back on ITV, basically saying that if Nmecha keeps playing the way he did the other night, his price tag is going to skyrocket. Neville called his performance outstanding, noting the kid looks like the total package.
Ian Wright doubled down on that assessment during the tournament coverage. When you watch Nmecha, you see a guy who routinely breaks lines and crashes the box with ease, operating with the luxury of having Joshua Kimmich there to cover his tracks. Whether he’s deployed as an 8 or a 10, he has the finishing touch to match his build-up play. It’s no wonder heavy hitters like United are keeping close tabs on him. He really does seem to have it all, making him a hell of a Plan B if the front office decides to pivot away from their other targets.
